CHAPTER TWENTY

“You have broken tile in the bathroom and destroyed Bella’s dress. I think you have a problem,” Stella said around a snicker as she pulled her borrowed jeans on. After finally experiencing sex—with a male she was quickly becoming obsessed with—she was starving.

Rhodes’ lips twitched slightly as he stood by the window, eyeing the yard below.

“What’s wrong?”

“Nothing. I have an errand to run and I need you to stay here.”

“I’ll go with you.” She needed to talk to Lola and was hoping the snow leopard shifter had worked her ‘hacking’ magic, even if she wasn’t quite sure what that was.

He pushed away from the window, his movements economical, lithe, especially for someone so large. He was in a tunic and loose pants, choosing to wear his own clothing instead of the more modern style that Axel had let him borrow.

Stella found that she liked him best in nothing at all.

“I wish you could.” His expression was sincere as he grasped onto her hips in that deliciously possessive way that made her squirm. “But I need you to remain here. Safe. Not that you are not capable,” he tacked on.

As if he was soothing her frayed edges. Which, okay, he was clearly trying to. “Where are you going?” She didn’t want to be separated from him, not even for a moment, and the realization was sharp. She slid her arms around him, held tight.

“I can’t tell you. And I don’t want to lie to you.”

She blinked at his forthrightness, even as frustration boiled inside her. He was being honest at least. “Will it be dangerous?”

“Anything could be considered dangerous.”

She glared up at him but didn’t release her grip. “You’re being intentionally frustrating.”

“Yes.” He leaned down, captured her mouth in a sweet, sensual kiss that sent heat curling through her.

Sighing, she stepped back. “You’re not getting away with it because of that kiss, but because I trust you. Just be safe and let me know if you need help. And I promise to stay put.”

The look he gave her, she couldn’t even begin to read. But then he kissed her again, this time more thoroughly.

She clutched onto his shoulders, needing the anchor as he practically devoured her. When he finally pulled back, she wanted to beg him to stay, to get naked again.

But she had pride. Sort of. Maybe not so much where he was concerned.

Then he groaned, laid his forehead against hers. “I really have to go, but I don’t want to. I’d rather be naked in bed with you.”

“I’d rather that too,” she whispered.

Sighing, he stepped back, his expression promising she’d get her wish later at least. And that would have to do. She was beyond frustrated he was just leaving but…she trusted him.

Once he left, she made her way downstairs and found one of the tiger twins in the kitchen making coffee. It would have to be Harlow, she realized, because Brielle was off on a short mission. Even if she hadn’t known that, she’d have recognized Harlow’s eyes.
